Are you into smart technology and network of connectivity?  If so, look no further than the Senior Engineering Manager (Software) position offered by Aprilaire. In this role, you will lead the software team of two in designing, planning, developing and maintaining software components for Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud, and mobile applications.

Responsibilities

Technical Accountabilities

  • Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of third-party design partner to enable productive and scalable cloud and app development
  • Along with the external design partner, develop and maintain strategy, architecture, models, and patterns:
    • Web Application Frameworks
    • Rest APIs, MQTT and similar protocols
    • Mobile or other UI platform Frameworks
    • Enabling Cloud Services, e.g., AI/ML, Stream Processing, IoT Hub, API Gateways, etc.
  • Participate in the analysis, configuration, administration, support and ongoing maintenance of the IoT platform
  • Act as Product owner and scrum master for the IoT (Backend and App) software projects
  • Participate in new product (proof of concept) ideation projects with respect to the IoT platform and mobile applications
  • Collaborate with the electronics engineering design team and product engineering teams in integrating IoT solution to the HVAC controls
  • Interface with various hardware and software vendors on complex system integration tasks to achieve efficient, cost-effective and delightful product solutions

Leadership Accountabilities

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary design team to translate customer needs into IoT (Backend and App) software components that meet cost, schedule and performance requirements
  • Support and guide team in risk assessments, suggest and execute feasibility investigations, and provide guidance on bringing new technology to market
  • Communicate timely and accurate project status and provide alternative problem resolution ideas
  • Ensure product release schedules are on-time to meet milestones
  • Improve the New Product Introduction (NPI) process of the design and development of IoT (Backend & App) software
  • Provide technical leadership by clearly communicating and guiding product strategies across multiple markets
  • Participate in design reviews and design decisions
  • Champion continuous improvement. Set priorities, allocate resources, and remove obstacles to enable team to operate efficiently and reach its full potential.
  • Grow, mentor, and inspire engineering team by owning all elements of the employee life cycle: recruiting, onboarding, training, performance management, career development and advancement
  • Develop and manage KPIs for the team
  • Lead the IoT software team in collaborating closely with other cross-functional teams to achieve organizational goals
  • Communicate vision for team members by ensuring a common understanding of the organization's goals and priorities
  • Ensure teams are considering the use of leading-edge technology and keeping pace with revolutionary and innovative trends
  • Collaborate with others in Marketing, Sales and Mechanical Engineering as a technical resource for IoT

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent
  • Minimum 12 years of software design and development experience
  • Minimum 5 years of practical experience in at least three areas: .Net, C#, Java, Javascript, Python, Web Services, SOAP, REST, front-end software like Angular, React etc.
  • Minimum 3 years in one or more specific IoT / embedded / Machine-to-Machine (M2M) industry (i.e. home automation, business automation, health, asset tracking, smart utilities, etc.) with successful multiple project executions
  • Minimum 3 years working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience with deployment, configuration, administration and ongoing support of backend IoT software based on cloud platforms like AWS
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience managing a Software team
  • Certified in AWS Solution architect desirable
  • GitHub / BitBucket experience desirable

 

Additionally, to be successful in this role, you will have experience and/or knowledge and understanding with:

  • Solution architecture, desired. Ability to take system level user stories, and determine components, frameworks, architecture, messages, storage, etc. to design and deliver a cloud based architecture.
  • Systems infrastructure with deep domain expertise in areas such as networking, storage, high availability, cloud security, application performance, reusability, etc.
  • Mobile app development using mobile app Software Development Kits (SDK) (iOS or Android)
  • Coding practices and standards, including object-oriented design, code refactoring, and code documentation
  • Relational databases, MS SQL Server, including experience in data modeling and creating T-SQL queries and stored procedures
  • Internet protocols and web server communications, including HTTP, TCP, UDP, Web Sockets, etc.
  • MQTT & AMQP
  • Internet security and best practices, SSL/TLSS, PKE, etc. 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work with non-technical users 
  • Agile/Scrum environment
  • Software versioning systems using GIT
  • Machine learning applications/products
  • Remote data via third-party APIs and JSON
  • Provisioning, commissioning and remote device management in the context of IoT
  • Bug tracking system such as JIRA and strong debugging skills
  • Continuous integration tools, automated testing frameworks, etc.
  • Leading cross-functional teams
  • Leading a team in people development, leading change, and managing conflict
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication with all levels of the organization and with external contacts
  • Ability to work remote if residing outside of Wisconsin. Requirements if working remotely:
    • Training in Madison, WI headquarters the first three weeks of employment
    • Minimum of one week per month working onsite at Corporate Headquarters in Madison, WI
