Aprilaire is currently seeking an Embedded Software Manager who will lead the electronics team of seven in carrying out engineering projects that involve design, development, test and launch of electronic products and components used in the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry for residential, commercial and industrial applications. The Engineering Manager will also be involved in the hands on hardware and firmware design activities for individual projects.


In this role, you will have both technical and leadership accountabilities which include:


Technical Accountabilities

  • Oversee the design and development of hardware (both analog and digital circuits) for embedded systems designs which include high level HW architecture design, design calculations, worst case calculations, schematic entry, circuit simulation, PCB layout & library management
  • Oversee the design and development of Firmware for embedded systems designs which include high level FW architecture design, development and unit testing
  • Design products with wired/wireless communication interfaces like RS-485, TCP/IP, Modbus, Zig-bee, Wi-Fi etc.
  • Design embedded controls with RF circuit
  • Design products with multiple sensors (temperature, humidity, airflow, VOC and dust, etc.)
  • Develop engineering, quality control and reliability specifications. Oversee the design, perform and document product verification tests.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for new products and recommend solutions
  • Supervise prototype builds and testing
  • Source and qualify components
  • Collaborate with vendors and consultants on specifications and qualification
  • Write project status and progress reports while supporting existing products


Leadership Accountabilities

  • Lead a multi-disciplinary design team to translate customer needs into electronic products and components that meet cost, schedule and performance requirements
  • Grow, mentor, and inspire engineering team by owning all elements of the employee life cycle: recruiting, onboarding, training, performance management, career development and advancement
  • Lead the Electronics team in collaborating closely with other cross-functional teams to achieve organizational goals
  • Collaborate with other functional groups like Internet of Things (IoT), Mechanical Engineering, Marketing, Sales and as a technical resource for Electronics
  • Support and guide team in risk assessments, suggest and execute feasibility investigations, and provide guidance on bringing new technology to market
  • Improve and integrate the design and development of electronics controls within the New Product Introduction (NPI) team
  • Choose, create, and promote documentation of processes
  • Partiner in design reviews and design decisions
  • Champion continuous improvement such as setting priorities, allocating resources, and removing obstacles to build a team to reach its full potential
  • Contribute a deep understanding of Aprilaire's goals and priorities to support the growth of your team


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or a related field with 12-15 years demonstrated experience in embedded systems design and development
  • 5 years' experience in the HVAC industry, with a focus on design and manufacturing of Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) equipment embedded controls
  • 5 years' experience leading electronics control teams


Additionally, to be successful in this role, you will have experience with:

  • Leading electronics design projects through launch and production
  • Regulations, standards and codes such as those produced or endorsed by, but not limited to UL, IEC, IEEE, NEMA, NEC etc.
  • Environmental, reliability and qualification testing
  • Root cause analysis and corrective action principles
  • Embedded systems design (system, hardware, and firmware) for medium to high volume applications
  • Electronic controls New Product Introduction (NPI) process improvement
  • CAD package for schematics capture and PCD layout (Altium preferred)
  • Oscilloscopes, multi-meters, emulators, and debuggers and simulators
  • RF design, high speed digital design and analog and digital senor interfaces
  • Communications interfaces (including SPI, 12C, RS-232, RS-485)
  • Embedded systems firmware development using programming language like C, C++
  • RTOS such as embedded Linux, free RTOS, low level device drivers
  • Specifying electronic manufacturing processes and environmental and reliability testing of electronic designs
  • Design of high volume (10,000-50,000) electronic assemblies, working with HVAC equipment
  • Data acquisition systems
  • Leading complex product development cycles
  • Leading cross-functional teams
  • Leading a team in people development, leading change, and managing conflict
  • Leadership abilities including trust, confidence, coaching and mentoring
  • Hands-on, progressive and creative thought leader
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication with all levels of the organization and with external contacts


Familiarity with:

  • Residential HVAC controls, such as thermostats, zoning, indoor air quality, and equipment controls
  • Networked controls and software solutions
  • Building and/or home automation standards
  • Electronic controls trends and technologies
  • Knowledge of controls systems, standards, and trends in North America
  • Electronic controls manufacturing technologies and supplier relationships
  • Commercial building management control systems
