Aprilaire is currently seeking a Principal Engineer- Systems & Control Engineer / Advanced Technology Leader who has a passion for product research, development, and innovation.

In this role, you will explore and develop innovative technologies and product opportunities that can be commercialized, and aligned with Aprilaire’s overall company strategy. You'll apply your knowledge of products and systems, building sciences, codes and regulations, and customer needs to guide and influence Aprilaire strategic product direction and provide the highest level of IAQ at the best value, with simple and easy to use controls.

Responsibilities

• Builds and manages a world-class technology research and technology structure in systems and controls.
• Interfaces with marketing and sales for opportunity analysis. Develops and aligns the organization to a 5+ year technology road map and research strategy.
• Conceptualizes and communicates system level products and concepts. Understands product strengths and weaknesses and how they work together along with the HVAC system, IoT and building practices, including smart homes.
• Develops algorithms and systems that help manage and optimize multiple devices/sensors, specifically to improve indoor air quality.
• Provides guidance to the organization on capabilities and strengths of current systems and improvements needed to make the system stronger, feature rich, simple to use, and above all, robust.
• Challenges status quo by exploring and maturing new system architectures and associated enabling technologies.
• Manages system and component technology evaluation, prototyping, risk reduction and feasibility demonstration.
• Drives evaluation of new technologies related to products, sensors, algorithms, data management/analytics etc.
• Develops new test environments and methods to characterize capabilities of new technologies.
• Effectively partners with Engineering & Technology team members early to transfer proven technologies and facilitate their incorporation into next generation products.
• Drives progress utilizing an influential and collaborative approach.
• Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of research and development.
• Monitors the use of experimental techniques to develop well-designed, documented experiments that are statistically meaningful and use the standards during component development phase.
• Organizes the coordination of activities with outside suppliers and consultants to ensure timely delivery.
• Identifies, tracks and evaluates emerging technologies in startups and academic groups that we may want to invest in or partner with.

• Experience with mechanical, electrical, system integration, high-volume manufacturing, project management, organizing technology strategies/roadmaps and identifying and evaluating partnership opportunities.
• A solid technical background in humidification, dehumidification, air filtration, ventilation, zoning, building & implementing algorithms, sensors, architected /engineered products is desired.
• Familiar with the IoT platform space with knowledge of smart home systems, data management and other key IoT technologies
• Experience in the area of psychometrics, thermodynamics, air flow, control algorithm development and execution, data gathering, analysis and presentation, human health and comfort is required.
• Understanding of electric circuits, embedded controls, and algorithms desired.
• HVAC system design and application knowledge desired. Also, building science, mostly residential (multi-family and plus), knowledge and experience desired.
• Strong data analytics desired.
• Experience with residential building practices and codes, including experience working with code bodies in the development or modifications of codes and standards a plus.
