Join us as we continue to grow! We are looking for a Safety Specialist (internally known as an Environmental Health and Safety Specialist) for our Human Resources team! You'll make an impact on our organization by administering safety and environmental policies and programs. You'll provide support company-wide to ensure a safe workplace, and compliance with all safety, health and environmental regulations and policies.

 

This position would flex between our Madison and Poynette facilities. 

Responsibilities

Your day will include:

  • Responsible for maintaining and promoting a safe and engaging workplace ensuring all employees, customers, contractors and visitors are safe
  • Create an effective EHS presence as a visible leader on the manufacturing plant floor to fully engage employees, contractors and vendors in EHS processes, expectations and requirements.
  • Administer EHS programs, policies and procedures. Ensure they are current and in compliance with federal, state, and local safety laws, regulations, codes and rules.
  • Maintain and support compliance with government regulations, permitting, training, reporting, and corporate policies/procedures.
  • Assist EHS Manager with sustainability efforts to minimize hazardous/non-hazardous waste, water emissions, air emissions, energy consumption, and other related environmental compliance activities.
  • Identify potential or actual risks through inspections of the facilities, machinery, equipment, and personnel practices to identify potential safety and health concerns and hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, engineering, etc., on the design and construction of new equipment, facilities and processes to insure safe design.
  • Assist in completion of thorough and timely incident and near miss investigations and ensuring implementation of corrective and preventative action activities.
  • Assist in managing workers compensation and claims management, including coordinating return to work activities with medical facilities and supervisors and claim resolution.
  • Coordinate with workers compensation insurance carrier to discuss accidents and injuries, tour facilities, and set up recommended safety programs.
  • Provides information to EHS Manager and other top management on  accidents,  causes,  and  costs  and  recommends  long-range accident reduction and cost containment objectives.
  • Coordinate the services of insurance carriers and outside consulting personnel.
  • Work with safety teams to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate safety policies and organizational objectives.
  • Assist EHS Manager in dealing with government agencies on safety, environmental and health matters affecting the Company.
  • Train employees and management in safe practices including hazardous communications, blood borne pathogens, respirator use, lock-out/tag-out, forklift operation, safe lifting, First Aid/CPR/AED and emergency preparedness that is required to remain in compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Administer programs required by OSHA, such as hearing tests, hazard communication program, and required record keeping. Update and maintain material safety data sheets and the training of new employees regarding MSDS.
  • Administer programs such as safety glass, safety shoe and protective clothing policies.
  • Coordinate the design and maintenance of machine and equipment guards. Conduct monthly general inspection of overhead lifting equipment, hoists, production machinery and equipment, etc., and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate personnel for resolution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational, Health and Safety Sciences or related technical field or equivalent experience

  • Three years of related experience in program management in an Environmental, Health and Safety capacity in a manufacturing environment.

  • Prefer ASP, CSP, CSHM (Certified Safety and Health Manager) or CSMP (Certified Safety Management Practitioner) certification and First Aid and CPR certifications

  • Knowledge of LOTO, Hazard Communication, EAP, Hearing Conservation, PPE, Hot Works, Confined Space, Respiratory Protection, First Aid, AED, BBP and First Responder, Fall Protection, and Machine Guarding, Hoist and Cranes and other EHS Programs
  • Knowledge of Job Hazard and Job Safety Analysis.
  • Experience developing and leading Safety Teams
  • Highly customer focused with ability to build rapport, establish credibility, demonstrate sound judgment, and positively influence outcomes
