Aprilaire is currently seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer - Building Science to join our rapidly growing Engineering team! In this role you will lead field and lab-based investigations to better understand the operation and interaction of HVAC system, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) system, IoT, and connected home modules for creating a healthy and comfortable environment.



Your day will include:  

  • Defining the critical data set for optimal data driven operation, maintenance, diagnostics, and service of residential HVAC and IAQ systems.
  • Being responsible for creating, testing, and updating IAQ algorithms.
  • Providing critical inputs and insights to Engineering &Technology project teams on built environment, building environment, thermal & moisture loading, and human comfort.
  • Being on the forefront of rapid development in building science and changing regulatory requirements, which may require sitting on committees and represented Research Product’s interest in building codes and regulations.
  • Having responsible for design, construction, and operation of IAQ model home for conducting research and development project in IAQ systems.
  • Working with outside organizations (universities, industry organizations, government bodies, business partners) to keep abreast with technological, regulatory, and industry trends.
  • Serving as the chief architect for IAQ system control algorithms.
  • Serving as technology leader and subject matter expert on building science and built environment.
  • Providing critical input on design, construction, and operation of IAQ model house.
  • Providing technical guidance / coaching and mentoring to Engineering and technology team in building science and built environment.
  • Working closely with the Engineering team to design, build and maintain a model home for research and development in HVAC system, IAQ, and connected homes.
  • Working with Engineering, Marketing, and Service to define data set for data driven operation maintenance, diagnostics, and service of residential HVAC and IAQ systems.
  • Developing and testing IAQ algorithms.
  • Conducting computer modeling on building, built environment, HVAC, and IAQ systems.
  • Establishing and maintaining a technology network to leverage external resources and partners.
  • Conducting technology scouting on emerging technologies in building science, built environment solutions, HVAC and IAQ systems.
  • Keeping track on regulatory changes and trends and provide regulatory updates to E&T leadership and team with recommendations on action.
  • Developing and executing field test programs.
  • Documenting testing reporting on test results with key findings and conclusions.
  • Establishing and maintaining a road-map for Aprilaire’s IAQ algorithm.
  • Providing IAQ related input to product road-maps for Aprilaire’s mitigating products.
  • Identifying sensor needs and help drive the development of relevant sensors.
  • Delivering projects that develop Aprilaire’s IAQ algorithm.
  • Managing priorities in an environment with multiple and simultaneous requests for help.
  • Providing prompt communication to stakeholders on important results.
  • Participating in relevant product development team meetings.

  • Master’s degree, PhD. preferred, in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related fields.
  • 10 years’ experience with building science, built environment solutions, HVAC and IAQ systems.
  • Good conceptual understanding of IoT solutions and connected homes.
  • Extensive knowledge on building codes, construction, ventilation, and IAQ & energy requirements.
  • Expert with a commanding grasp of building science, built environment solutions, HVAC, and IAQ systems.
  • Good conceptual understanding of IoT solutions and connected homes.
  • Extensive knowledge on building codes, construction, ventilation, and IAQ & energy requirements.
  • Insightful knowledge on metrics of indoor air quality and human comfort and consumer perception.
  • Experimental skills with conducting tests and evaluations on indoor air quality and human comfort.
  • Computer modelling skills.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Experience with leading projects from conceptualization to commercialization
  • Proven record in conducting advanced research and development in conducting R&D projects in build science, HVAC and IAQ systems.
