Aprilaire is growing and promoting and seeking an innovative and forward thinking Lead Product Designer to join our Engineering team. In this role you will wear many hats and be responsible for delivering creative results, working cross-functionally, and serving as a leader for other members of the growing design team. 

Responsibilities

In this role you will:  

  • Plan, organize and manage workloads of the design team.
  • Work closely with the design team and cross-functional groups to understand product roadmaps, project scopes and appropriately allocate resources to meet schedules and goals.
  • Provide ongoing guidance and training to design team, ensuring operational and technical excellence.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor design standards and procedures to meet business needs.
  • Work closely with engineers to ensure efficient processes and high-quality deliverables.
  • Identify opportunities for increased workflow efficiencies and best practices.
  • Inspire and motivate design team by building relationships and consistently communicating business objectives and updates.
  • Provide designers with clear and consistent direction with regards to goals and objectives, standards, and schedules.
  • Complete and maintain all required records/documentation related to product change orders and other departmental processes.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues with the design system and provides technical support.
  • Provide input to project budget, resource identification, and schedules.
  • Manage CAD hardware and software systems.
  • Develop design concepts that address the specific product needs including: reliability, durability, conformance to standards, manufacturability, and aesthetics.
  • Collaborate with product engineers to ensure all requirements are met.
  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings of parts, assemblies, and products.
  • Build prototypes of parts and assemblies of new products including units for testing.
  • Prepare bills of materials.
  • Perform tolerance stack-up calculations.
  • Collaborate with industrial designer to develop initial concepts of consumer-facing parts.
  • Work with vendors to develop specifications and obtain quotations for cost estimates. 
  • Work with the Procurement Department for vendor qualification and selection.
  • Inspect incoming parts for production approval.
  • Process product change orders.

Qualifications

  • A two-year technical degree in related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 3 years solid modeling experience using Solidworks (must have experience with sheet metal and plastic)
  • Minimum 3 years managing a team of 5 or more individuals
  • Highly skilled in the use of SolidWorks (specifically sheet metal, injection molding, assemblies, and drawings)
  • Experience managing a team of designers
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experienced with and passionate about leading, managing, and mentoring teams
  • Highly motivated problem solver with a rigorous attention to detail
  • Deadline-driven with excellent problem-solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Adept at overseeing multiple ongoing projects
  • Understanding of a variety of manufacturing processes including sheet metal fabrication and injection molding
  • Understanding of prototyping processes and techniques including 3D printing
  • Ability to read and generate specifications and drawings including physical, operational, reliability, and performance
  • Experience preparing multiple creative solutions to problems encountered
  • Knowledgeable about physical product development
  • Good level of general business acumen
  • Ability to use Excel, Word, and Power Point
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems and equipment - preferred but not required
  • Statistical skills (means, standard deviations, power, and sampling) - preferred but not required
