Production Manager, 1st Shift

Aprilaire continues to grow and is looking to bring in a new strategic and forward thinking Production Manager to our Poynette manufacturing team. As the Production Manager, you will direct and coordinate production activities to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations to maximize profits.


In this role you will: 


  • Lead, manage, inspire and motivate the supervisory team and production staff in line with the applicable policies. Coordinate production activities with other departmental managers to ensure the manufacturing objectives are accomplished in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Carry out labor and OH financial planning for the direct and indirect production staff, ensure labor and OH costs are within approved budgets and productivity projects are identified.
  • Work through supervisors to assign daily work to production staff and oversee related processes in manufacturing order set up, assembly, and work cell operation to maximize effectiveness of personnel available.
  • Responsible for coordinating/communicating the production hand offs with 2nd/3rd shift to ensure the continuation and completion of production schedule.
  • Responsible for developing/running an effective daily line-management process to maximize short term and medium-term actions needed to minimize downtime and maximize overall cost effectiveness.
  • Assure all SOP’s, quality standards and checks are being conducted correctly, timely and effectively daily.
  • Work closely with PIC and Materials to prepare operational schedules, plan labor and coordinate manufacturing activities to ensure production meets on-time delivery and targeted attainment goals.
  • Work with buyers and supply chain to ensure production is uninterrupted by part shortages.
  • Develop and implement robust training and on-boarding procedures to assure new employees are assimilated effectively and efficiently.
  • Manage, motivate, train and mentor staff to do their best work. Promote team cohesion. 
  • Conduct collaborative recurring team meetings to assure departmental alignment with corporate initiatives, current business objectives, current state-of-the-business and addressing any employee issues/concerns.
  • Participate in, provide information for and coordinate company programs in such areas as employee relations, discipline, vacation schedules, job evaluation, employee performance appraisal, labor relations, and grievances.
  • Take leadership role in hitting financial targets for departmental variance and overhead spend.
  • Analyze monthly financial schedules for the department and to identify the primary drivers of labor/material variance and overhead spend.
  • Identify and lead variance reduction projects in labor, materials and overhead to assure the department is hitting budgeted targets. 
  • Develop and recommend plant capital and operating budgets to ensure conformance to budgets.
  • Be responsible for continual improvement in overall departmental housekeeping and promote continuous improvement in 5S in all areas to help meet goals and objectives of the department.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in safety, quality, process, product flow, visual management, 5S, material usage, information flow and drive to resolution/implementation
  • Review production costs and modify production and inventory control programs to maintain and enhance profitable operation of plant.
  • Work with Procurement, Engineering, Sales, Marketing, and other departments to aid and implement cost reduction initiatives, new tooling and methods, work simplification, man-hour planning, incentive rates, scheduling, quality control, maintenance and machine repair.
  • Cooperate with the EHS manager on training of employees in safety awareness, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, fire and severe weather emergency procedures and other programs as required.
  • Thoroughly document all relevant accidents and incidents.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Management, Supervisory Management, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Five to ten years of management/supervision experience in a manufacturing environment. Experience in a union environment is ideal.
  • Knowledge of and experience with integrated manufacturing systems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.  Communication skills will be necessary in one-to-one situations as well as large group settings.
  • Ability to effectively present information and engage in problem solving with large groups and respond to questions from managers, customers, vendors, or other employees within the organization.
  • Creative and inquisitive approach to problem solving.
  • Focus on building relationships to engage and motivate staff.
